Setting up a new computer

Here are the settings I change & apps I install when setting up a new computer for development and general productivity. If you have any suggestions for macOS tips or new apps I should try, tweet me @oscrhong.

Settings

  • Set my caps lock key to be escape
  • Hide icons on Desktop — defaults write com.apple.finder CreateDesktop false && killall Finder

Dock preferences

  • automatically hide
  • position on screen = left
  • don’t show recent apps
  • remove delay & transition effect

Finder preferences

  • show path bar
  • show status bars
  • new window show Downloads
  • default list view
  • enable preview
  • Remove items from Bin after 30 days
  • Keep folders on top: in windows when sorting by name, desktop
  • When performing search: search the current folder

System preferences

  • General — show scroll bars = always
  • Trackpad — tap to click, max tracking speed
  • Security & Privacy
    • use Apple Watch to unlock computer
    • set lock screen message
  • Accessibility
    • three finger drag
    • use scroll to zoom
  • Mission Control
    • Hot corners for ⌘Lock Screen (TL), ⌘Notification Center (TR), desktop (BR), and quick note (BL)

Applications

  • Pro tip: use Homebrew Cask + a Brewfile to download & install most of these apps in a bundle.
