Compiling x86_64 assembly program on M1 Mac

If you have an M1 Mac and want to compile and execute x86_64 assembly code, make sure you install Rosetta 2 and nasm (brew install nasm).

Than, take a 64 Bit assembly program, e.g. from this tutorial page (https://cs.lmu.edu/~ray/notes/nasmtutorial/) in Section "Your First Program" for macOS, save it to a file called hello.asm.

Compile, link and execute the program:

nasm -f macho64 hello.asm
ld hello.o -o hello -macosx_version_min 11.0 -L /Library/Developer/CommandLineTools/SDKs/MacOSX.sdk/usr/lib -lSystem

./hello

Setup nix, nix-darwin and home-manager from scratch on an M1 Macbook Pro
###
### [2023-06-19] UPDATE: Just tried to use my instructions again on a fresh install and it failed in a number of places.
###. Not sure if I'll update this gist (though I realise it seems to still have some traffic), but here's a list of
###. things to watch out for:
### - Check out the `nix-darwin` instructions, as they have changed.
### - There's a home manager gotcha https://github.com/nix-community/home-manager/issues/4026
###
# I found some good resources but they seem to do a bit too much (maybe from a time when there were more bugs).
# So here's a minimal Gist which worked for me as an install on a new M1 Pro.

Connecting an IPS TFT display (ST7789) to an arduino nano and testing image output.

Guide on connecting a ST7789 display to an Arduino Nano.

I recently decided to order an arduino nano and a tft display from AliExpress. When I looked up online it took me some time to find a clear guide how to connect the display to the arduino, either the display had different pins or it was a slightly different model, but with some trial and error, I managed to get it to work.

What you'll need for this:

  • 1x Arduino Nano
  • 1x AdaFruit 1.3" 240x240 ST7789 display
  • 6x jumper wires or whatever else you can use to connect

How to Learn Rust

Learning Rust

The following is a list of resources for learning Rust as well as tips and tricks for learning the language faster.

Warning

Rust is not C or C++ so the way your accustomed to do things in those languages might not work in Rust. The best way to learn Rust is to embrace its best practices and see where that takes you.

The generally recommended path is to start by reading the books, and doing small coding exercises until the rules around borrow checking become intuitive. Once this happens, then you can expand to more real world projects. If you find yourself struggling hard with the borrow checker, seek help. It very well could be that you're trying to solve your problem in a way that goes against how Rust wants you to work.

Check if pull needed in Git

Check if pull needed in Git

First use git remote update, to bring your remote refs up to date. Then you can do one of several things, such as:

  1. git status -uno will tell you whether the branch you are tracking is ahead, behind or has diverged. If it says nothing, the local and remote are the same.

  2. git show-branch *master will show you the commits in all of the branches whose names end in 'master' (eg master and origin/master).

If you use -v with git remote update (git remote -v update) you can see which branches got updated, so you don't really need any further commands.

Commit message guidelines

Commit Message Guidelines

Short (72 chars or less) summary

More detailed explanatory text. Wrap it to 72 characters. The blank
line separating the summary from the body is critical (unless you omit
the body entirely).

Write your commit message in the imperative: "Fix bug" and not "Fixed
bug" or "Fixes bug." This convention matches up with commit messages
