Private discord channels

To make a Discord channel private and accessible only to certain members, you'll need to adjust the channel's permissions. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to do this:

  1. Open Discord: Launch Discord and navigate to the server where you want to create the private channel.

  2. Create a New Channel or Edit an Existing One:

    • To create a new channel, click on the plus icon (+) next to "Text Channels" or "Voice Channels" in your server's channel list.
    • To edit an existing channel, right-click on the channel name and select "Edit Channel."
  3. Set Channel to Private:

    • If you're creating a new channel, toggle the "Private Channel" option.
    • If you're editing an existing channel, go to the "Permissions" tab.
  4. Manage Roles and Members:

    • You can now specify which roles or members are allowed to access the channel. To do this, click on the "+" icon under the "Roles/Members" section in the channel settings.
    • Add roles or members by typing their names into the search box and selecting them. You can also click on roles or members already in the list to adjust their specific permissions.
  5. Adjust Permissions:

    • Once you've added a role or member, you can customize their permissions for the channel by toggling the various permission switches. Make sure to grant access (green checkmark) to the roles or members you want to have access to the channel and deny access (red X) to @everyone or any other roles you want to keep out.
    • Common permissions to adjust include "View Channel," "Send Messages," "Read Message History," etc., for text channels, or "Connect," "Speak," and "Use Voice Activity" for voice channels.
  6. Save Changes:

    • After setting the permissions as desired, click the "Save Changes" button to apply the new privacy settings to the channel.
  7. Verify Channel Privacy:

    • It's a good idea to double-check that the channel is now private by looking at the channel list. A private channel will have a lock icon next to its name.
    • You can also ask a member who should not have access to confirm that they cannot see the channel.

Remember that only users with the "Manage Channels" permission can adjust these settings. If you don't have the necessary permissions, you'll need to ask a server administrator or someone with the right permissions to make these changes for you.
