Talos Linux Installation Guide (macOS)

This guide walks you through creating a bootable Talos Linux USB drive from macOS and booting your target machine.

Prerequisites

• A USB flash drive (at least 2GB). Warning: All data on this drive will be erased.
• A Mac with Terminal access.
• Target machine (bare metal) with x86_64 architecture (amd64).

Question: I want to compile my Rust source code for the Windows platform but I use macOS.

Solution:

1. Install target mingw-w64: brew install mingw-w64
2. Add target to rustup: rustup target add x86_64-pc-windows-gnu
3. Create .cargo/config
4. Add the instructions below to .cargo/config

1. Open Automator.app
2. Create new Quick Action
3. Select Run AppleScript
4. Add this:

set inputVolume to input volume of (get volume settings)
if inputVolume = 0 then
	set inputVolume to 100
	display notification "Volume set to 100" with title "✅ Microphone is on"

To rename WSL Distros on Windows follow the steps:

1. Stop all instances of WSL
   On PowerShell run the command: wsl --shutdown

2. Open Registry Editor and go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Lxss
   Each subfolder on Lxss represents a distro
    
3. Locate and rename the distro you want
   Inside each distro folder you have the DistributionName, change it and click ok
