snarky ai art discourse post

You advocate a

  • technical
  • legislative
  • social
  • harassment-based

approach to fighting AI art. Your idea will not work. Here is why it won't work.

  • I can just download Stable Diffusion and run it on my laptop.
  • I can just download LLaMA and run it on my laptop.
  • Diffusion models don’t work that way.
  • Large language models don’t work that way.
  • Copyright law doesn't work that way.
  • Fair use doesn't work that way.
  • You will not win a lawsuit against Disney.
  • It's impossible to prevent people from downloading an image if you send the image to their computer.
  • It’s hard for humans to reliably detect if something is AI.
  • It’s hard for machines to reliably detect if something is AI.
  • The cost of a false positive greatly outweighs the benefits.
  • AI detectors are easily circumvented.
  • AI detectors have an unacceptably high false positive rate.
  • Data poisoning tricks are easily circumvented.
  • Your plan would make the Internet Archive illegal.
  • Your plan would make Archive of Our Own illegal.
  • Your plan would make copy pasting illegal.
  • Companies already tried that in court with VHS and that was deemed legal.
  • Adobe already has a dataset of licensed art they can train on.
  • People could just falsely mass report people they don't like.
  • Harassing random artists on the internet doesn't do anything.
  • Harassing the social media manager of random companies doesn’t do anything.
  • More restrictive copyright laws would further harm small artists.

Specifically, your plan would immediately destroy all of the following types of art:

  • Fanart
  • Vaporwave
  • Collages
  • Photobashing
  • YTPMVs
  • Memes, in general
  • Procedurally generated art
  • Process art
  • Plunderphonics
  • Breakcore
  • Most genres of EDM
  • Photography
  • The mere concept of remixing

and the following philosophical objections may also apply:

  • You can't own an art style.
  • It should be morally permissible to make and sell fan art.
  • It should be morally permissible to make and sell poorly made art.
  • It should be morally permissible to make and sell derivative art.
  • Photography already exists and that didn’t cause the death of art.
  • Photoshop already exists and that didn’t cause the death of art.
  • FL Studio already exists and that didn’t cause the death of art.
  • Your idea is the same as what NFTs promise to do.
  • “Degenerate art” is a fascist idea.
  • At some point, plagiarism of sufficiently many sources is just normal remixing.
  • how_people_think_edm_is_made.png
  • Curation is a form of intent.
  • Nobody is obligated to "prove" their art was made without AI.
  • Not all art is about originality.
  • Not all art is about author intent.
  • Not all art is about who puts in the most effort.
  • Not all art is about "soul", whatever that means.
  • I should be allowed to compose and distribute a remix of Megalovania without getting permission from Toby Fox himself, even if he doesn't like it.
  • In general, it’s wrong to harass people

Furthermore, this is what I think about you:

  • Sorry, but I don't think it would work.
  • This is a bad idea, and no one should listen to your art opinions.
  • Fuck off and stop posting goatse in the ai art tag. You are not funny.

Based on qntm’s remix and the original
